Software

Software is the term to describe the programs you can use on your computer. Software includes your "operating system", typically Microsoft Windows(R), Office type programs like your word-processing program ("Word"), music players, photo programs, and games. Software is also used to control things like your printer, scanner, or internet and email .

Can software go wrong?

Unfortunately, yes. Sometimes you can have a program that has been running perfectly, and then suddenly you might start getting error messages, "dings" or other warning sounds if you try and do something, or simply nothing happens when it should.

These are all symptoms of a program playing up. These can sometimes happen seemingly without warning or reason.

Why does software go wrong?

Many reasons, and sometimes for apparently no reason. Sometimes you may have a virus on your system, so it always pay to check you have an up-to-date anti virus scanner and run a scan.

Frequently it can be caused by changes to your system, like installing a new device or software, or something as simple as downloading updates for another program. Often it may be impossible to explain why software "goes wrong".

How can it be fixed?

Depending on the cause of the problem, fixes can include removing the software (backing up settings and data wherever possible) and reinstalling it, updating "drivers" or "patches" for the particular program, or hardware on your computer.

In some cases it may even be necessary to reinstall your operating system, and then reinstall the software afterwards. The solution will vary depending on the software itself, the problem, and the likely cause.
